Role summary

Orchard Therapeutics, Ltd. is a biotechnology company incorporated in September 2015, dedicated to bringing transformative gene therapies to patients with serious and life-threatening rare diseases.

As the company is rapidly expanding its pipeline of medicines for primary immune deficiencies, inherited metabolic disorders and haemoglobinopathies, we are looking to appoint a Director, Business Development & Alliance Management, to lead the expansion of the portfolio and manage existing academic and industrial alliances.

Working closely with the SVP Business Development & Alliance Management, the role requires a tenacious individual with a passion for cutting-edge science, deep business development experience and a highly collaborative style.

The Business Development team is small, highly performing and plays a central role in Orchard Therapeutics’ success. This is the first position of its kind opened in Orchard’s Boston office, and a unique opportunity to shape the rapid growth phase of a biotechnology company with a rich portfolio spanning from early stage to commercial transformative gene therapy medicines. The position is global, with a focus on US East Coast.

Responsibilities

  • In- and out-licensing
    • Work closely with Corporate, R&D, Commercial and Manufacturing teams to understand and support key strategic goals relevant to business development activities
    • Lead search and evaluation for business development opportunities supporting Orchard’s strategy, from preclinical through commercial stages
    • Structure and deliver due diligence process, in coordination with all functional lines
  • Transactions
    • Lead financial terms proposals, based on application of relevant methods (discounted cashflow analysis, comparables, etc)
    • Work in tandem with internal and external legal teams to craft legal document underpinning the contemplated deals
    • Recommend deal execution
  • Alliance Management
    • Pilot integration of acquired/partnered/divested programs and IP
    • Manage interface and lead committees overseeing the collaborations between Orchard and its partners, taking accountability for the overall success of the collaborations
    • Maintain and develop alliances with existing academic and industrial collaborators, in good intelligence with Program Management teams and Medical Affairs

Requirements

Knowledge

  • Business development experience across all stages of pharmaceuticals development, with associated deep understanding of preclinical, clinical, manufacturing, regulatory and commercial aspects
  • Demonstrated track record in successful execution and management of strategic collaboration, in-licensing and out-licensing agreements. Experience in other business transactions such as M&A transactions, joint ventures, co-promotion agreements.
  • Knowledge of gene therapy science and competitive environment
  • In-depth knowledge of enterprise portfolio management
  • High scientific acumen and natural passion and curiosity for the gene therapy field
  • Demonstrated ability to positively interact and work in good intelligence with therapeutic and functional area leaders.
  • Outstanding presentation and communication skills, demonstrated ability to influence C-level management
  • Thrives in a rapidly evolving environment, with ability to lead in parallel strategic and tactical tasks
  • Resourceful and creative
  • Strategic mindset, including the ability to prioritize tasks, identify the most relevant parameters driving a business decision and to focus the work accordingly
  • Strong analytical skills required to provide sound inputs into financial evaluations. Experience in financial modelling and analysis a plus
  • Strong business orientation and the ability to view issues from multiple functional perspectives, while managing organizational ambiguity
  • A dual background in science or medicine (MSc/PhD/MD) and business (eg MBA) is preferred.
  • Past academic or industry experience in the field of cell and gene therapies is preferred
